About Me

TsooRad is a blog for John Weber. John was a Skype for Business MVP (2015-2018) - before that, a Lync Server MVP (2010-2014). My day job is titled "Technical Lead, MS UC" - I work with an awesome group of people at CDW, LLC. I focus on collaboration and infrastructure. This means Exchange of all flavors, Skype, LCS/OCS/Lync, Windows, business process, and learning new stuff. I have a variety of interests - some of which may rear their ugly head in this forum. I have a variety of certifications dating back to Novell CNE and working up through the Microsoft MCP stack to MCITP multiple times. FWIW, I am on my third career - ex-USMC, retired US Army. I have a fancy MBA. One of these days, I intend to start teaching. The opinions expressed on this blog are mine and mine alone.

Migration from LCS to OCS R2

In my new project, I am involved in figuring out the migration of LCS 2005 to OCS 2007 R2.

Should you be in the same boat, you may appreciate the following list of prerequisites you will need on some/all of your LCS servers. And I suggest your read the supporting information on these updates and hotfixes.  There are some stumbling points.

Ensure that Live Communications Server 2005 servers are patched with the following updates:

Live Communications Server Service Pack 1: This upgrade to the base LCS 2005 is available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3508860C-2616-4B5A-BA00-353BE599A7B1&displaylang=en

Update for Live Communications Server 2005; February 10, 2006, available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911996

Live Communications Server 2005 post-Service Pack1 hotfix package: July 21, 2006, available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921543

Update for Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1: September 2008 available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950614

User Experience during Phase 7 of Migration

Users will experience downtime while their accounts are being moved. Because the new features that are provided by Office Communications Server 2007 R2 are not available to users of Live Communications Server 2005, the user experience will otherwise remain unchanged until you have deployed upgraded clients to the users that you have moved.

Users will exist in one of two states: homed on a Live Communications Server pool or homed on an Office Communications Server 2007 R2 pool. Because the feature set of the 2005 release of Office Communicator client is fully supported by both pool versions, the user will not know the difference. Communicator Web Access users will not redirect to the legacy Communicator Web Access server after the user is moved to the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 pool.
